How Mature Is Your Channel Attribution? Take the Quiz

Channel attribution is the ability to prove which marketing activities drove partner revenue.

There are four stages of channel attribution maturity, and most programs are stuck in the first two without realizing it. The difference between them isn’t budget or headcount. It’s whether you can see what’s happening before it shows up in a revenue report, or only after.

Answer the five questions below to see where your program actually lands. It takes about two minutes, and there’s no email required to see your result.

Why This Gap Is Bigger Than Most Teams Think

Legacy attribution models measure whoever happened to be standing at close when a deal rang up. Everything a partner did before that, the co-funded event, the technical validation, the training that built their confidence to pitch you over a competitor, never makes it into the report. Forrester’s Kathy Contreras has called this exact failure mode out directly: legacy models oversimplify or ignore partner contribution entirely, leaving executives blind to value that’s actually there.

Programs where 90% or more of enrolled partners actively send campaigns generate 3.44 leads per partner, nearly five times the 0.71 average from programs with activation under 75%.

That gap is invisible to anyone only looking at closed revenue.

The Four Levels, Side by Side

LevelWhat it measuresWhat it misses
1. Transaction onlyRevenue closed by partnerAll pre-close influence, non-transacting partners, brand contribution
2. Activity trackingPortal logins, deal registrations, training completionsAny causal link between activity and revenue
3. Influence attributionMulti-touch partner influence across the buyer journeyForward-looking signals, disengagement risk
4. Channel intelligenceBehavioral signals correlated with future revenue, predictive scoringNothing. This is the ceiling of channel measurement

Most programs don’t move up this spectrum by accident. They move up by connecting data that already exists but currently lives in three or four disconnected systems: campaign engagement, incentive activity, and sales outcomes, all reporting to different teams on different schedules.

The quiz above gives you a rough read. If you want the full picture of what’s driving the gap industry-wide, and what closing it is worth, the underlying research is worth a look.
